Musing on Boredom

I used to have this description on my blog. I took it away, but somehow it's still on my bloglovin' page. It says this: I abhor the dull routine of existence. I crave for mental exaltation. - Sherlock Holmes, on drug use".
via weheartit
I took it away cause the drug part was weird, but I still believe that it's the point of my blog. I feel like right now, I'm going through the dull routine of existence. And I really, really wish I didn't feel that way because I'm at such a unique and special time in my life.  My master's program offers night classes and this semester, I'm not working. My entire day is free and I feel like I have very few responsibilities. I mean, how often in my life am I going to not work and be responsible only for myself? I don't think I'll ever get this opportunity again.
So instead of feeling bored and antsy (and guilty for not having a job/working on what I'm supposed to be) I'm going to take this time to ENJOY LIFE.

1. I want to vlog. I know that I've done this a little before (see here) but this type of vlog is a little different. Lately, I've gotten into watching daily vlogs, where people just carry a camera while they go about their day. Not every second of it is always interesting, but there's a few personalities out there that I really like. I'm very much a beginner at editing and mostly doing it for myself, but I might post it if I feel like it would actually be interesting to others.

2. Go shopping during the day. Most people shop on the weekends, at night, or during their lunch break. However, since I have most of my days free, I could hit the mall when there's no one in sight.

3. Lunch with friends. Most of my friends are working, but I'm sure I can scrounge up a few friends to try some new restaurant lunch menus with me.

4. Read more books. I have a few days of break between this quarter and the next so I'm going to take the time to read some books... Recommend me your favorite classics!

5. ..   What's on your bucket list? What would you do if you had my weird schedule? What have you always wanted to do but have never found the time to.

  5. I envy your opportunities. Use them. Savor them. Do the stuff working-stiffs can't. Shopping during the day is fun; lunching with friends is wonderful. And you can't beat reading.

  9. You go girl! I'm the same, whenever I get bored, I look for the next project. One out of a hundred times, I stick with it. But it's still fun to begin something new.

Read more books - don't we all need to do that. I just read 'No Easy Day.' Have you read it? It was good.

  10. This is an exciting time of life for you! And it's such a unique gift to have your days free! I'd like to think if it were me I would NOT sit in my jammies watching Dr. Phil but that I would take morning Pilates classes, visit museums, get the cheap tickets for matinee theatre, read in the park, shop at the farmers market, and volunteer at the animal shelter. Whatever you choose to do, just enjoy this time!

  17. I'm actually going to be in a similar position really soon- this summer will be my last quarter of grad school, but I only have class Mondays and Wednesdays! I'm going to fill at least 2 of the other days babysitting for little guys I used to watch before grad school, but that's still going to leave me with a lot more free time than I'm used to. I'm definitely with you on the reading thing, and I think I'm also going to try and roadtrip to visit family and friends in nearby states. My biggest goal is to make it to Europe in October, but I forget how fun it can be just to get out of town for a few days even if it's close by.

Thanks for taking the time to find me! Love the blog!

  18. I've been feeling this way, too, since I work full-time but I have the evenings free. If you're looking for a quick but awesome read, I recommend "Speak" by Laurie Halse Anderson. It's a YA book, but it's one of my absolute favorites. I reread it once a year.

  24. Hi dear, I think its great that you will be having free time for yourself, now you will get to do all the things you never could or had time for before. I would love to take up new creative classes during the day, start a gym/dance/yoga class and refine my passions. Enjoy this time off!

  25. Shopping during the day is my favorite! It is so nice to go into stores that aren't crowded. Now when I go in on Saturdays I can't believe how crowded it is.

  26. I love that image (well probably because I love Sherlock!). Shopping during the day is awesome, btw. I used to go after getting out of class at like 10, and there would be barely anybody there!

Oh, and reading more books is always on my list (:

  27. I have some free time now before I start my new job. And boy I want to do so many things - like taking more pictures, organizing my pictures so that they don't just live on my computer but as photobooks (I want to do a series of these... of our family, of piri, or my husband, of myself...) - I want to thrift and vintage! I want to write handwritten letters... and read. I used to read so many books but the past year and a half I've been terrible in reading and finishing a novel!

  28. I find that I'm most productive when I'm the busiest, if that makes sense. If there's a lull in my schedule, I just bum around. That said, if I had your schedule and some downtime, I'd certainly hit the gym, shop, and get some around-the-house projects done.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Oh man, where do I even start. First of all - I love that quote! I would like to read more, blog more, and get outside more. If I had your schedule I would try to get outside and do a solo hike somewhere!

  31. I know exactly how you feel! I freelance a lot, and it's tough to structure your day when you don't have work or school forcing you to do so. It just takes some extra motivation, but I'm sure you'll feel much better once you start in on your goal list. Good luck!

  32. I would really like to see you do some vlogging!!! I would like to do some vlogging myself! I wish I had some free time, if I did I would sleep in more, work out, shop, try new places to eat and drink, and read more!!!!

  34. You're really lucky now because you have time to do what you want to do :D Vlog, go out, hit the malls, and enjoy every second of it :D It's going to be fun!
Books are an awesome way to remind yourself of your interest in the world and your intelligence! hehe Classics are always good. Jane Austen? :D

  35. Ahhh Sherlock!

Anyway, #2! Shop! There's something calming about going to a mall when it's not really busy (even though I do love the rush of a busy mall). It's so relaxing. Haha, how sad though, to say walking among consumer products pacifies me.

But reading more books? Definitely! I've got a list of books to read, mostly from movies that have come out lately. Cloud Atlas is definitely on it. If you haven't seen the movie, I highly recommend it! Honestly the best movie I have ever seen (even tops Nolan's work!)

    1. Wait, totally realized that I commented about Cloud Atlas last time when you did a 2013 movie post. Come to think of it...I talk about Sherlock, etc, etc everytime I'm here. Whoops. Blame my horrible short-term memory, and insane inner fangirl.

  41. aww i love this hahaha.. i sort of understand what you're going through.. before i got married.. i worked full time.. sometimes full time and part time.. and at one period.. i was going to school full time.. while balancing 2 different part time jobs!! well when i got married my hubs didn't want me to work.. so all of a sudden i went from working like 60 to 70 hours a week to not working at all.. i didn't know what to do with myself! i quickly found out however that maintaining a household actually takes a lot of time haha.. i pay all of our bills.. clean the house ect.. but i do find a lot of free time to meet friends for lunch.. run daily errands and yes even shop in the day time :p

  43. I went through this exact stage last semester, although I was in school and working, there wasn't much effort to be put in so I had more time. I used the time to sleep in, shop during the day while it was less busy, clip coupons (to buy stuff I didn't really need- muahahaha), baked/tried new recipes, and worked out. I hope you find something to do, if not, take it easy this semester. Everyone deserves a little break when they can, like you said, you might not ever have this opportunity again.

  44. Ah ever since I started full time work, I've been thinking about what I should've done during my uni days when I had all the time in the world. Hiking trips, learn new skills like surfing, guitar, obstacle courses in the trees... go out there and live the life we wish we'd had!!!

    ReplyDelete
  45. hmm ok interesting I will check out your vlogs ;)

I agree some I like and some are simply boring but I think it really depends because vlogging is all about daily things you do right so if you keep posting the same road to you work it might get boring but if you vlog about something different it;s more interesting.

This is a good post I want to type more haha

    Big Kiss !

  46. I would totally gym it during the day. take short road trips (theres this place wakefield that ive been dying to go but i dont want to go ont he weekend....) read more books definitely.

  48. My schedule and routine is different now too. I having a great time actually being able to get stuff done on my lunch break like quick shopping trips and blogging. I used to be stuck downtown with no shopping and barely any restaraunt so it is so nice to be free now.
