Book Snob, but...

So, I think I do a lot of things that are contradictory. For example, I'm kind of a book snob. For my book related posts, click here.
via weheartit
I don't really want to read what everybody on the internet is reading (Hunger Games). At the same time, I want to read something classic and popular. I like reading timeless books--novels that have stood through the ages. My friends always recommend me the fantasy or science fiction pick of the week but I don't remember the last time I picked something up with dragons and werewolves in a fantasy land.

So, I'm kinda snobby. Or particular. However you dice it.

But with movies, I'm the opposite. I mean, I post about movies often enough right? I love summer blockbusters that everyone watches. The movies I love to watch in theaters are always the ones that break revenue records not because they are so good, but because so many watch them. On the other hand? Critically acclaimed movies? Oscar nominated films? I don't think I've seen a film nominated for Best Picture in Years! I actively try to stay away from them.

I love bad movies, too. Actions movies with a very weak plot? I'm there. Comedies with little to no plot? I'm fine with a cheap laugh.

So that's that. I'm kind of a book snob, but I'm very much for the people in terms of movies.

What kinds of books and movies do you like?

  1. I am more of movie snob I think ^^ I refuse to watch chick flicks in theaters for example. I feel some irrational drive to only "give money" to films that impart some sort of "deeper message" (ei Blood Diamond, Babel, Children of Men) How I judge that before watching the film beats me ;) I'm just an irrational movie snob!

With books, I favor scifi, fantasy (I guess we can't be in the same book club >0<!), and organizational psychology books, but I'll read anything that people recommend to me. Some of my favorite books are very lighthearted reads (eg The Finer Points of Sausage Dogs, one of the best titles ever)

  2. Hehe, what a contrast. I'm definitely a "blockbuster" kind of movie watcher. I am just not "deep" enough for a movie that makes me think ;). I like mindless entertainment. As for books, I'm not an avid book reader. I rely on friends' recs for books, whether they are mainstream or not.

  3. So glad I'm not the only person who likes action movies with bad plots. They are like cheap thrills. We all need those once in a while.

  4. I'll read almost anything. I'll read the popular books so I know what everyone else is talking about, but I also like Russian literature, sci-fi, fantasy.... etc. As for movies, I'll also watch almost anything. Movies with simple plots are really nice when I don't want to think about deeper meaning or symbolism and whatnot, but I also like stuff with complicated plots. It depends on my mood, I guess.

  5. Yeah, I'm pretty much the same. I expect a certain level of quality from my books, even the easy-read chick-lit. But movies - if it's comedy or horror, I'm pretty much there.

  6. I used to be a book worm! I'm choosy when it comes to what I read. I didn't read the hunger games books too! I didn't like the movie -_- I usually hate movie adaptations! Especially if its a book that I really liked. I read that way too, lying down and in gloomy places..hence, my higher prescription.

  11. Ahh, yes. I'm a book snob, too. So funny how you're the opposite with movies. I'm similar in that way, too. Except I mainly enjoy comedies.

  15. i think you should give hunger games a shot. i stayed away from it.. i won't say i am exactly a book snob but i am very selective about what i read. then went to watch it in the theatre with a friend who wanted to and i liked Jeniffer Lawrence in Winter's Bone a lot so i went for it..my 1st reaction after watching it was heading to the book store and buying the whole series.haven't regretted it. i watch all kinds of films as films are a passion for me. hollywood to world cinema to different kinds of indian cinema. lately i have been avoiding most recent Bollywood films though.

Thanks for your sweet comment the other day! Have a fab weekend!!

  19. I'm with you on the book thing. I still have yet to read Hunger Games... as far as movie goes, I pretty watch everything. I don't really like going to the theater. I know, kinda weird.. but I like cuddling on the couch in my PJs with some popcorn at home!

  21. Haha I never ever read so I can't comment on books, but I'm with you on movies! I've watched a few critically-acclaimed movies and never really loved them but give me a cheesy comedy or horror flick and I'll be happy :)

  22. That picture is my life with books and computers... I'll read all the fantasy and sci fi stories I possibly can, so long as they've got cool female main characters. (Okay, I'll occasionally read something with a male main character, but I'm usually not interested in reading about them...) As long as I like the writing style, really, I'll read it. Movies, I'm very weird about. My brain somehow figured out how to take on all emotional and physical pain it witnesses and translates it into physical pain, along with absolutely awful secondhand embarrassment. I can rarely watch anything without being insanely uncomfortable the whole time, so I just tend to skip movies a lot of the time. I think the only thing I can watch without too much cringing is My Neighbor Totoro.

  23. I also don't prefer the popular nor supernatural inspired books - Harry Potter/Twilight. I like more meaningful novels. With movies I guess I prefer the art nouveau flicks but also a good rom com every now and then.

  26. You and I are book / movie twinkies because that's exactly how I am as well. I am SUCH a book snob.

I'm currently reading The Unlikely Journey of Harold Fry and am really liking it.

  27. lol it's so funny how it's kind of opposite for you with books and movies. I'm a bit of both. I also like reading timeless, classic books, but I like to keep up with what everyone else is reading too. I'm the same as you when it comes to movies. I don't remember the last oscar nominated film I've watched...I don't pay much attention to those haha

  28. haha i don't like reading/ watching things that everyone is reading too. even though i don't read as much as i should anyway.

  29. i love reading books - everything from chiclit to mystery to sci fi! and movies i have a pretty eclectic taste - animation to romance to comedy to action and documentaries! :)

  30. Classic books are great but I tend to reach for the popular (read: easy reading...hehe) books more. :P They're just better bedside reads imo.

As for movies, I'm the opposite! I try to see every Oscar nominated flick each year...lol.

  31. Goodreads is probably great for you, eh?

My reading depends on my mood. If I'm super stressed, I want to read something junky and easy, like YA fiction. Otherwise, I stick mostly to dystopias.

  32. I totally agree with you sweetie, these days i am so much into soaps and political books(scary) lol than movies cause i feel the real stuff happens in soaps than the fake movies of dragons and all sorts.

  33. In general, I like to read / watch things (Shades of Gray - horrible, Hunger Games - entertaining, Sookie Stackhouse series - so formulaic but I still want to know what happens) to see what the fuss is about. Unfortunately, many times I wind up disappointed. I used to read only fiction, but my last favorite book was Tina Fey's Bossypants and I want more! Ultimately, I want to be entertained and buoyed so tend towards the lighter hearted fare.

  34. I think I like both! I loved the hunger games but I also do love classics. It's especially so exciting when I read a classic book and then I actually understand the deeper meaning and it just feels so fulfilling :3 As for movies, I love all types of movies (except for horror) but especially the blockbuster kind. Even if the plot is formulaic, I still like it :)

  35. haha I agree with you xDD Im glad im not the only one !

  36. I'm both a movie and book snob. I almost exclusively read classic novels, and I usually stay clear of popular blockbusters and action movies, since these usually have very little plot or substance.I'm very picky when it comes to comedies; I go more fore dry humor and wittiness than slap-stick.
