What I've Learned from my Health Journey So Far

You may have already heard of everything in this post. You may choose to skip it or read it just to give yourself a bit more motivation.

Just start.
I think too often, we wait for a special occasion to start. New Years, or a new month, or an engagement, or an event. However, I started because I downloaded a new calorie counting app  that I fell in love with. It was no specific time... in the middle of November. There was no pressure on me to continue, but I've used the app everyday since then. I haven't stayed under my calorie limit, of course, but I can say that over the past 6 months, I've been conscious of what I'm putting into my body.

Messing up shouldn't mean giving up.
It's so easy to eat unhealthy within a day, but just because there was a bad lunch doesn't mean that you should also have dessert and an awful dinner. Just because you didn't exercise Monday and Tuesday doesn't mean that you should probably wait until Monday to start thinking about it again. So often, we stop trying or set a new start date because we want to be absolutely perfect. But perfection is not going to happen. I think the most successful individuals aren't the ones that don't fail but are the ones who can pick themselves up after failing.

Surround yourself with support.
You wouldn't believe how much simpler it is to eat healthy and exercise when you surround yourself with people who do. Instead of trading unhealthy recipes, you trade healthy ones. Instead of visiting steak houses, you visit the new lunch salad place. When your friends complain about being sore, it reminds you to go harder. For me, following a few trainers on twitter was a good amount of inspiration. They would constantly urge me to do better

Any more words of wisdom to share?

  1. I love that quote and I LOVE this post. I feel like so much of health and exercise is attitude and motivation, and it's so easy to get discouraged. Lovely blog you have here!

  8. Nice post! I use the calorie counter app and while it's a bit of a pain to keep track of every tidbit I eat, I think it's really helped me drink more water. Keep us updated on how things go :D!

  11. It really is easier to eat healthy when those around you do it too! My fiance and I have been eating healthy and working out consistently for a few weeks now and it's so easy when we're doing it together!
I also like to follow people on instagram who post healthy meals and their workout progress for motivation :)
    Yay for healthy lifestyles!

  14. So true, the second thought really resonated with me. There are some days we where we do cheat and maybe don't have enough time or motivation to work out, but that shouldn't mean we must give up. Thanks for your kind words over at mine :)

  15. I like these practical and straightforward steps to getting healthy! These 3 have totally been my motivation for working out and being healthy in April. My husband (my support) and I joined a gym (just start). And even if I don't get to workout 3x/week, I don't give up and just start again. I think trying different workouts or schedules and finding what works for you is key. If working out is too hard, you won't do it. So hopefully it fits into your lifestyle like a glove.

  18. oh man, this makes sense. i think that's why it's so hard to motivate. but once you push past that month then the second month it's so much better. i lost weight relatively fast after baby 3 but then i've plateaued now and it's killing me!! i soooo don't wanna change how i eat!

  21. Great advice. The only words of wisdom I can offer is to not stop working out and watching what you eat just because you've reached your goal weight. Weight is easier to maintain than lose!

  23. It is so hard to change diet/exercise habits! But every little bit counts. I've been exercising regularly for years now, and I actually find that if I stop for a few days I start to feel sluggish and bleh. :P Best of luck to you! :)

  29. Messing up doesn't mean giving up = so true!! I totally agree with the successful people quote. too often I ask myself to be perfect but I found its nearly impossible, because we all have lazy days...the determination to pick myself up after slips is the most difficult part though!
