Time for a hairstyle change? Professional Asian Work Hairstyle

The last time I posted about Asian hairstyles, it ended up being one of my most popular posts ever. That was in March of 2011. Now, in 2013, I'm thinking of getting a haircut change again. Just to be clear, this is a haircut change, I have gotten a few trims in the meantime. ;)

You can scroll through my recent pictures to see what my hair is like. I think it's pretty standard for Asian hair. Very long. Pretty boring. Nothing special. Now, I don't plan on changing it to anything special either, but I do want to change the look for work.

Length: One thing I know is that I want it shorter. After trial and error, I've determined that long hair looks good on me. Long hair weighs enough so that I can roll out of bed and have straight hair without doing anything. At the same time, there's always that length of hair that really toes the line between long and nasty. Right now my hair is waist length and I am at that line. I want my hair chopped a few inches shorter. Perhaps four or so? I think the length in these two photos look really nice.

Layers: The second change I want to make is more layered. The layered hairstyles don't work for all those buns and top knots I like to make when I'm home, but I think it works wonderfully for a neater look. In addition, layered hair is better after curling. There's less of a "lion effect". I just have to make sure to not get it super duper layered. I really like how the layers in the photo to the left look (though I might make them a bit longer. I hope that my final effect after curling looks like the photo to the right (only shorter, of course).

General style: I've already mentioned that I like throwing my hair in messy buns when I'm at home but for work, I think I really like these hairstyles. On lazy days (ie 350/365 days of the year) I have my hair straight. If I can replicate anything remotely similar to the look on the left, I'd be a happy girl. The look on the right is that wavy haired look I like so much. I'm not quite sure if it's work appropriate, so I guess I'll have to see how messy it looks on me.

I've mentioned before that I'm a huge hair n00b, so do you guys have any advice for me in creating an easily maintained flattering haircut?

I'm also starting work this Wednesday. I know it's going to get real boring real fast, but I'm still a little excited. I'll to be out of town for a week and a half due to training, so no posts during that time! I'm sure I'll be tweeting up a storm though, so please follow me @seven_percent

  2. Good luck at work! Really liked reading this - Asian hair is just such a category of its own... I always get my hair cut when I'm in China, and it's so difficult to communicate exactly what I want, since their idea of hair-styling is so different there!

  4. I would say if you want easy to care for hair, the length you're looking for is perfect. I had a bob cut for a while and it was a pain to keep neat, especially if you have naturally wavy hair >_<

I still haven't solved the mystery of how girls get wavy hair to look so relaxed yet not messy....if you figure it out...def post it ^_^

  5. Hi Aki, good luck with your new job, congrats on it!:) I am honest: I really love your hair and, being a fan of long hair, I like how you have it now! Maybe try something more layered but please dont cut too much!:) Share the photo if you will change the look!:) xo

  7. This was an EXCELLENT post. Asian hair is vastly different from others, and even in a place like Seattle, where there's a huge Asian population, I have trouble finding the right stylist who can offer the right style choices.

By the way, I think you'd look great in layers.

  20. hey girl :)
thanks so much for your comment!
so the shoes aren't the most comfortable and they're kinda high since they don't have a platform, but they aren't unbearably sore or anything. but i'm also used to wearing high heels so if you're not that could be a problem. they also aren't the most high quality shoes so the heels do wobble just a bit but i don't have any problems walking in them. just don't plan on walking miles when you wear them. hope that helps :)

  22. I love bangs but I don´t have the tamed hair for it. So I´ll just content myself admiring that hairstyle, first on the right.

P.S. Check out the easy summer hairstyles I featured at the blog.

  23. I like the look on the bottom left - I think it is long as you want it, but versatile enough to pull back into a ponytail if you need it.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I think wavy hair is perfectly appropriate for work! I like the length you are considering. Layers are great too. I don't have much advice to offer since my hair is super thick, doesn't even look layered when it is cut to be so. I actually like my hair chin length, but have been keeping it long for reasons of laziness and hubs likes it longer.

  25. I would die for any one of these hairstyles. The bangs would give you some versatility.

  26. unfortunately I dont have any hairstyle advice, but all of those above are super cute! a change is always good! :)

  28. Wavy hair really looks flattering :)
I myself have just changed my hairstyle after getting so bored of my long hair to a shoulder-length wavy style. Loved it ever since!
But if you want easy maintenance I think straight hair (I assume this is your natural hair type) is still the best. You basically don't need to do anything with it besides combing!
Wavy or permed hair needs styling to show its best look and sometimes when you're in a hurry it just gets too troublesome.
OR, if you want your straight hair to look more flattering without curling it, you can always use your flat iron to create a slight wave at the tip of your hair, kind of like the first pic on the left!

  34. I think long hair is easier to get out of bed and not do anything, so I am up for long hair but not too much layers because if you are really having a bad hair day, the layers might go all over the place which make it hard to maintain.

Ah well, it's all about trial and error! But I think you look good the way you are now! :D

  40. oooh, i really love the left photo in the middle. such a lovely cut and i think that color just looks gorgeous with her skin tone. i am getting my hair cut today! i have to get layers in order for it to not look crazy so i will officially be saying goodbye to all top-buns, but hopefully i won't need them after my haircut ;)

  46. Waist length hair- that's my dream!! It's strange I sitting here thinking "I just want it to grow amother 4 inches" and you want to cut all of that off.
I'm a short haired girl at heart so all I know is layer a are the easiest hair cut, that and easy headscarf up dos.
Please show a before and after shot of your hair cut:)

  50. i was thinking last night how it has been so long since i came over to your blog and you came over to mine..i have so little time lately and i know you are busy too..i love hair like the kind in the 4th pic..but whenever i try to get to that length it gets ratty, the result of having had too many layered haircuts..the effect isn't nice..go for something which would look naturally good with your hair texture..any hairstyle that looks like it would need styling to look the way it does is a no no for me..i need to get out in 5-10 minutes most mornings so i keep it simple and stylish..and medium length..tying my hair overnight in a tight bun gives nice texture..

  51. I think layers can look beautiful and the wavy hair would still look smart enough for work :) xxx

  52. I'm so jealous of your long hair, how is it that you want to cut it shorter omg. My hair looks like the first photo on the right albeit shorter - and it ALWAYS stays that way. I remember (permanently) curling my hair twice within a week and it reverted back to its usual straight mess after three days. So irritating.

  53. So inspiring. I need a new hair style, I guess haha.
